Ft. Washington & 176th, 1983.
Here, #8639 looks almost as bright and shiny as a vintage tinplate toy!
Look closely, and you can see that one of the rear door panels hails from a "donor" bus*.......

Flex #7352 seems almost to be a scale model, overshadowed by an elaborate "Erector Set"......

I'm wagering around Delancey Street (probably one of the slips), with the Williamsburg Bridge to the right. Meaning this would likely be the Avenue D branch of the M14.

Does this M14 branch still run today?
This area (to me) still seems like "AVE. B" territory......

All:
Regarding the rear door panel that clearly came from another bus; it would seem that, especially during the "deferred maintnance" era, this would have been more or less common, especially as the fleet aged, and new parts were no longer available (years ago, I well remember buses of the old Hudson County-area "indies" often sporting the "patchwork" look, in later years)
In this instance, the "donor" parts (such as door panels) were seldom repainted, and said bus would display the "patchwork" look until being retired.
Wasn't too pretty to look at, but it WAS, at least, interesting........

In fact, there are two branches, still today: M14A and M14D, each for the avenue on which they run south of East 14th. For a few years until 2010, there was also an M14C, running along Avenue C.

W.B.:
Thanks for the info; too bad "AVENUE B." is now just another fondly-remembered "fallen flag".
Had I known at the time (mid-70's) that they still operated MACKS (the last MACKS vanished from my area about 1968) I would have, without a doubt, been making frequent trips downtown, happily snapping away with my trusty KODAK Instamatic........

Willets & 148th, 1973......
The MABSTOA Fishbowl, the classic American-built autos, the prewar work car on the El up above, and the huge Winston billboard are all evocative of another time, now nearly a half-century in the past......

Here we see two TA bus "doctors" operating on an old look "patient"... in this case the patient is a TDH-4510 (notice the wide separation between the rear windshields). The bus license plate says "59".
The TA depot is unknown.
PS... The patient was born in 1949 and deceased in 1965.

A GREAT photo....and a rare one, as well......thanks for posting!
As we all know, the Old Looks were built like the proverbial tank, and yet, the majority of "Tee-Yay"/MaBSTOA Old Looks were retired when they were roughly only 15 years old.
Compare that "retirement age" to that of most subway cars, in particularly the prewar cars.
In the 1960's, many cars (such as the Lo-V's and "AB" Standards) were already past their 40th birthdays, and still in service.
As some Old looks in my general area soldiered on until 1986, it would stand to reason that the "Tee-Yay"/"Em-T-Ay" could have also kept their Old Looks on the roster for a number of years more.; in LA, the RTD was still operating Old Looks quite a number of years after the last vanished from the streets of "Noo Yawk".
The Old Looks, like the later Fishbowls, were indeed built to take years of punishment (which indeed they did)
Look at the ex-DL&W MU cars; when NJT retired the venerable old "Wickerliners" in 1984, the newest cars (the motors) were 54 years old, while the many trailers (converted from steam-hauled rolling stock) dated to before 1920.
50-year passenger old rolling stock was indeed commonplace, once upon a time; when was the last time anyone saw a 50-year old bus still in revenue service?
The long-defunct WASHINGTON STREET lines in Hoboken had a number of mid-late 1930's buses on its roster, well into the 1960's.......

Regarding my previous post.........
If the "Em-Tee-Ay" was still operating at least some 56-year old buses (I'm thinking of the longevity the remaining 1964-vintage R-32's), we'd still able to ride 1964-era Fishbowls! (at least, for a little while longer!)
In particular, I'm thinking about still being able to ride at least some 1964 MaBSTOA TDH-5303's right now, in 2020.......

Regarding the life expectancy of transit buses.......
In 2001, the city of Valparaiso, Chile, was still operating a group of PULLMAN-STANDARD trolley buses, that then had been in service for nearly 50 years (they were delivered in 1952, the same year that trolley bus service began)
Alas, the sleek postwar ST. LOUIS-built trolley buses built for Brooklyn were barely in service 12 years before the remaining trolley coach lines in the borough were converted to diesel bus (I've always wondered why these virtually new electric coaches could not find a buyer for further service elsewhere, even if they were sent overseas).......

These are interior views of the GM model TDH-4510 as operated by NYCTA and MaBSTOA.
This is bus #4336
Note that the forward facing seat, on either side, directly in front of the rear lounge seat was removed.
BTW, both Green Bus Lines and Triboro Coach, each had at least two TDH-4510s bought from the TA

If I had a dollar for every Old Look I ever rode, from my childhood until the last vanished from my area in 1986, I'd have QUITE a little "nest egg" right now!
How very familiar buses like this were to me, in my much, much younger days........

traildriver.....
True enough.....but only WHEN the vintage buses are brought out to play, which wasn't the case this past holiday season.......
"NYO"
(I'm only glad that I rode Fishbowls countless times during my lifetime, when they were still in service!)
