Regarding the bat-wing side sign for route 15....

If memory serves me right... I believe there was a reading that said “15 Jackson Heights” (JH in two lines)... Fifth Ave. was left in the dust.

MaBSTOA 15:

In mentioning Jackson Heights, I'm again thinking about how so many not at all "in the know" regarding New York bus history, tend to associate FACCo. with operating ONLY on Fifth Avenue, and no where else.

FACCo. was indeed a company that was far more diverse than many realized, and served other thoroughfares besides the posh environs of Fifth Avenue.........

Haven't seen any of those on batwings - non-batwings, definitely. But 1965 batwing signs had 'FIFTH AV' rather than 'FIFTH AVE' on 1966-67 batwing signs.

As this was in Queens, no doubt this bus was to be the future M35. But why they would've said 'M102' on the front, is beyond me . . . and it was three months before they were to adopt that name for what until then had been M101A.

W.B.:

Though most certainly NOT the expert you are, I was also wondering why there was an "M102" reading displayed on the front sign.

Here, I see you are as puzzled as I am (too bad we can't go back to that moment in time and ask the driver what the story was with that front sign displaying "M102")......... Wink

3rd Avenue & 149th, 1978.

Though the old 3rd Avenue El had been closed for five years when this photo was taken, the area still looks much the same as it did when INTERBOROUGH gate cars, Composites, MUDC's, and "Q's" (former BMT units) rumbled, clattered, and swayed along overhead.......

And since then? Nedicks, Sachs and Thom McAn - all gone with the wind.

W.B.:

Back in the 60's, I well recall Nedicks....the BEST hot dogs and orange drinks! Very Happy

The two I remember most (back in the 60's) was the one at Journal Square (which also afforded an EXCELLENT view of all the bus action then going on outside on "The Square"), and, also, the one near the shuttle at Times Square (Mom and I often ate here close to 60 years ago; the sounds and smells of the IRT were indeed a GREAT bonus......"SUPERLATIVE entertainment with your food!" Wink

When I was out of high school, and really starting to seriously "railfan" the subways, I also (several times) went to a Nedicks on the IND underpass at Jackson Heights...this was a LOOOONG time ago!!!! Shocked

Another Nedicks I remember well was on the ramp going down to the IRT from 8th Avenue (PABT), near the stairways to the # 7 Flushing trains.

Man, where does the time go...I know I sure don't know....(!!)

No use to ask Sandy Denny* about that - she's been dead since 1978.

* She wrote "Who Knows Where The Time Goes" back in 1968.

W.B.:

That's like realizing that only two of The Beatles are still with us (John Lennon, RIP, left us far too soon)

It is indeed sobering when watching a "classic" TV show (even shows from the 1980's) and realizing that either most of the cast......or all.......are now deceased. Sad

Look at how many of the "ol-tyme" Amazin' Mets are now playing multiple innings in that big Shea Stadium in the sky.

It is the same when looking at vintage bus photos; you wonder if any of those veteran drivers are still alive today (say, if a pictured driver was in his 40's in the early 70's, if he were still here, he would be into his 90's.

Of course, all of the FACCo., NYO, and SURFACE men have long since retired to that big depot in the far beyond......

Broadway & Warren, 1969.

This indeed was the era of MaBSTOA Fishbowls still carrying "OA" insignias, WOOLWORTHS (remember "five-and-tens"?) and, of course, NEDICKS (note too, the ancient, once-so familiar fire box)........

34th & 2nd, 1971 (just imagine what some of those classic cars would be worth today!)* Shocked

*Remember, "way back when", when a FOREIGN sports car looked so dang EXOTIC?? Shocked

In my neighborhood, the only non-American cars I ever recall were VW Beetles.....(!!)

(note, too, the small movie poster towards the rear on #8602 for "FIDDLER ON THE ROOF", which is one of my all-time favorite films, that, in 1971, made the transition from stage to screen)

*Note, also, the then still-familiar telephone exchange on the flanks of the moving van on the left.

(No location/date given for this photo)

Flex #7352 seems almost to be a scale model, overshadowed by an elaborate "Erector Set"...... Wink
