Fellows:

One of the things I loved about MaBSTOA was that, prior to the MTA era, there was still that distinct aura of "separate indentity", as could be easly seen by the huge (and distinctive) "OA" insignias carried on the buses.

Sure, they were PAINTED like any other "Tee-Yay" bus, BUT, in truth, was an entirely different ball game!

Though part of Your's Truly wished that MaBSTOA was still with us today, another part of me says "it's just as well".

With all of the "classic era" era equipment long since scrapped, even if MaBSTOA was still with us today, it would still all seem so "ho-hum".

The many, many hundreds of old photos taken, back in the day, shows us the tremendous wealth of interest that was once all-so-commonplace, but, today, only exists in memory and photos.

MaBSTOA, itself, was a truly interesting operation (one that most younger enthusiasts have never even heard of), indeed taking us back to its very earliest days, as well as recalling FACCo, NYO, and SURFACE........

Even waaaaaaay back in 1971, the "Old Order" was clearly vanishing (4th Avenue & 9th St., 1971); note that a new "MTA" insignia has already replaced #3302's old "OA" emblem.........

Bryant & Westchester, 1972.

MaBSTOA "individuality" was still to be seen, if you knew where to look.....

IMHO, one of the BEST vintage MaBSTOA "action shots" ever snapped (Hudson & Bethune, 1972).....

34th & 2nd Avenue, 1972.

Another nostalgic glimpse back to the MaBSTOA era......

Although an original 1963 front roll sign (clearly indicating 132nd Street was an original depot assignment for this first order of buses for MaBSTOA) was on display in front. Talk about the old and new orders in one bus . . .

And the 'OA' emblem was only on batwings; what was replaced was the long 'Manhattan and Bronx Surface Transit Operating Authority' script on the top of the standee windows.

W.B.:

I sure wish it were possible to go back in time and be able to visit one of the "Te-Yay"/MaBSTOA rollsign shops and shoot the breeze with some of the guys, and watch them in action (and, maybe, even be sent home with a few "souveneirs"!) Wink

One of the reasons I liked the side curtains on the "batwings" was that they reminded me of many old photos I had seen, showing center entrance streetcars sporting large side roller curtains.

Too, the "batwings" are now nostalgic in their own right; they, indeed, do recall a time in the past when the bus hobby was STILL a quite fascinating one, and, in "Noo Yawk" alone, provided the enthusiasts of that era with much in the way of color, diversity, and individuality....sadly, as as the case in other cities, those days are long gone.

Kudos to the bus enthusiasts of that era who took so many hundreds of outstanding bus photos for us to enjoy and study today......... Very Happy

Notice how the '15' side sign has 'FIFTH AV'. This was another distinguishing characteristic of 1965 batwing side signs. The late 1966 side sign seen on page 5 of the thread on bus depot roll signs had the top right line changed to a closely-spaced 'FIFTH AVE':

W.B.:

Once again, I can indeed see a REAL need for a thorough book dedicated to New York bus roller curtains through the decades; the many variations in lettering and numbering, plus the history of the bus routes themselves, would fill a HUGE void in the libraries of "Noo Yawk" area bus historians/enthusiasts.

Your knowledge (permit me to again repeat myself) on roller curtains truly is most impressive, to say the least; to be perfectly honest, I had NO IDEA the tremendous wealth of historical information that was out there, behind all these roller curtains of many years back, before being treated to your intense and exhaustive "narratives"........dang!!! Shocked Shocked
