On new look 8059 all of the ads are for Gordon's gin. Was this on purpose? Was an advertiser able to have the whole bus to themselves? Did this cost more?
As far as advertising, how much did a bus company make? Were there different rates for outside and inside the coach?
Also, why was outside advertising banned for a time?

kdr3bt:

I had noticed this myself; IMHO, the advertiser paid to have one bus displaying nothing but his ads for his product.

Though I have not ridden the subways since I retired in 2003, I know that an advertiser can utilize the interior of a car to display only his company's ads.

Gordon's, I recall, also used to be quite commonly displayed on interior ads, as well.....

There is a photo of MaBSTOA Fishbowl #8683 in Guy E. Martin's "NEW YORK CITY TRANSIT BUSES" adorned with nothing but GORDON'S ads.

The bus was signed:

"4 TO CLOISTERS-VIA 110 ST."

"J&B", also, was an ad featured on many buses for years; this photo was snapped at the CIRCLE LINE pier, back in 1976.

(note the MICHAUD Eagle in the background)......

Outdoor advertising on buses was banned for decades because it was considered a distraction for pedestrians, or something. Such a ban was upheld in 1917 by the Supreme Court in a case involving, of all entities, FACCo. The state lifted such a ban in 1959 - as well as lifting a ban on buses wider than 96", all of which dovetailed with the introduction of the first New Looks to the city. (That, and the emergence of a new company, Transign, which introduced mylar roll signs.)

Speaking of GORDON's bus ads.....

One of the rarest toy buses I have is a large tin friction London double decker (made in Japan, 1960's) that is festooned with GORDON's ads.

That a TOY bus* would be displaying ads for an ALCOHOLIC beverage, to say the least, IS more than a bit unusual!!!!! Shocked Shocked

"NYO"

* (I can easily see an old-tyme "barkeep" displaying this toy bus above his bar, along with other "novelty" items; I also have a 1970's ceramic liquor decanter made to look like an open-top FACCo. bus, signed for the "3"!)

DEWARS and GILBEY'S ads were also quite commonplace on "Noo Yawk" buses, back in the day (Broadway & 64th St., 1973)........

That '11 TO ABINGDON SQ' looks like it could've been from a cloth section. I've seen that type variant in certain sizes of some 'Old Look' route number/description front signs made c.1964, especially of buses assigned out of the 132nd Street depot (where 11 was assigned between 1965 and 1972), as below.

W.B.:

LOVE that sharp roller curtain (natch!) Wink

(also, as always, appreciate the information!)

Am curious as to how, back in the long-ago "BUS-O-RAMA" days, as to how the ad panels were swapped out for newer ones; how were these mounted? (heavy duty spring clips, bolts, etc.)

Also, who manufactured the florescent tubes for illuminating the signs?

On average, how long did these tubes last before needing to be replaced?

This one's a long shot of long shots; do any examples of "batwing" ads survive today, at least partially, or were they all trashed years ago?

Thanks, as usual.........
