To me, a bus photo with an unreadable roller sign is candidate for the trash can. The sign ought to be clear, as it tells much about the bus route and gives a better guess at the location.

Joe:

I totally agree; though I love each and every photo depicting vintage buses (and subway cars) I find that the photos showing a bus (or subway car) with an unreadable roller sign is a distraction from the vehicle itself.

Here in NJ, too many times to count, back in the day, I can recall seeing GRUMMANS/METROS whose electronic signs were out of order, displaying nothing more than gibberish.

I also agree with you, that a photo showing a bus with a readable sign gives you much information on what route the bus is operating on, as well as the general time period..................

Frankly, I don't consider electronic signs as rollsigns. The rollsigns that are closest to being unreadable are when they're not centered and all you see is the bottom of one and the top of another.

I totally agree; I only mentioned those old electronic signs in passing.

As older buses aged, I can well remember when either the cloth or mylar roller curtains became snagged around the gears or otherwise torn; this, quite often, gave the roller curtain an unkempt, lopsided look.

Too, there were times when a bus might be totally without a front roller curtain, with only a hand-printed cardboard sign scotch-taped to the inside of the windshield..........

To this day I'm still fascinated with the split horizontal roll signs first used on the 1959 new looks. Granted they may have been hard to read, but nevertheless they were unique!

In this 1972 photo, it looks like #3310's roller curtain* has a tear.......

*Sign still had "3" displayed, and not the later "M3"..........

#3302 , seen here laying over on the "3" at 4th Avenue & 9th St., 1971 (note the old school "Tee-Yay" man on the right)

Even by itself, the split horizontal roller curtain is classic.........

That was one of the original 1963 front roll signs for 132nd Street's allotment of the first order of New Looks for MaBSTOA, even though (ironically) 3302 wasn't originally among those that garage housed. As I've said, whenever a group of buses was reassigned to another depot, the front signs would be taken off the departing buses and saved to put in whatever "new" buses are put in place.

This appears to be the 1966-67 set of front roll signs. It was with that which had '2A TO 8 ST VIA 7 AVE' originally (the last three words blacked out from such signs by 1972) - and would have had, on their by-then defunct Lenox Avenue branch, signs like '2 TO 8 ST VIA LENOX'. (I'm still waiting to see if slides taken in the 1966-69 period which would indicate one way or the other, of the Lenox #2 branch in question on SB runs, will turn up on eBay - which was how we know of that 1961 Flxible-Twin Coach 100 demo that plied at least three FACL routes that year.)
