All:

In "WELCOME ABOARD THE GM NEW LOOK BUS" (McKane/Squier)there is a photo on page 118, showing MUNI #3057; the bus is sporting a grafted section (still in MTA two-tone blue) from a 1963 ex-NYCTA/MTA TDH-5303.

The MUNI bus was a 1969 T8H-5305; this bus had been involved in a serious accident with a loaded gravel truck, and the ex-MTA body section replaced the MUNI body section destroyed in the wreck.

One of the questions I have, is why MUNI had to look clear across the country for a "parts donor"?

I would have thought that there would have been a "donor" bus available somewhere else in the State.

Also, I'm curious as to how how the MTA bus chosen for this MUNI body graft? (I'm assuming that it, also, had been damaged in an accident, or else, retired for another reason)

Look forward to any info/input....thanks in advance....

..........there HAS to be an interesting story (somewhere!) regarding this "hybrid" MTA/MUNI Fishbowl; it just seems (to me) odd that a "donor" bus could not be found in California......... Rolling Eyes

There were two Muni Fishbowls which were repaired with front modules from NYCTA 5303s. There is some discussion and photos in Mr. L's GM New Look Oddities, about halfway down the page, but no explanation of why junk buses from clear across the country were used as donors.

Thanks....I'll have to check this out later! Wink

Yes, it IS a head-scratcher indeed, as to why an MTA bus became a "donor" for a MUNI bus, a few thousand miles across the country....... Question Question
