The miniscule FORD in the background indeed looks quite tiny when compared to a "Big Red Car" (the famed "Hollywood" car was regarded by many traction buffs as PE's "trademark" car)......

Passing Pershing Park on a bright, sunny day, we have an older Red Car being trailed by a PE Old Look (today, such a bus would be as much a museum piece as the "Red Car" itself)..........

On the right, a WHITE bus (PE) awaits its next assignment in the shadow of an ex-SP East Bay "Red Electric" combine; note that the car still sports its old "East Bay" sliding vestibule gates, which have yet to be replaced by doors........

What a treat, thanks, NYO !!
Only thing missing is "Roger and Jessica"....you know...as in "Rabbit"...
The "portholes" on those "Blimps" can't help but make me think of MP-54's |

My pleasure!
Oh, by the way, did someone here mention "Roger" and "Jessica" (as is "Rabbit"??)
Indeed, the "Red Car" played a prominent part in that fun, classic "Toon"-filled flick........that being said, enjoy this behind the scenes "Roger Rabbit/Red Car" gallery!

*Yes, the portholes on the "Blimps" made them resemble the old PRR and LIRR MP-54's; they sure were MONSTERS compared to the little Birneys they ran on some PE lines! |

The inspiration for the sinister "Judge Doom" in "Roger Rabbit" (who was clearly out to kill off the "Red Car" and replace it with a network of freeways)........

Contrary to Doom's "Cloverleaf Industries" hype, the freeways AND the "Red Car" could co-exist side by side (just think of how the freeways are beyond gridlocked today, and how such a valuable rail line could be utilized).......

So ironic to think that, decades ago, electric rail transit in the LA area was deemed "outmoded", "antiquated", and "redundant".
And, today, LA has networks of both light and heavy rail electric rail transit serving the public......hmmmmmmmmm........
The bus always had (and always will) have far more flexibility than a rail car; still, as in New York (and elsewhere) think of how much of a vital lifeline electric rapid transit is to millions of people......as well as to the cities they serve.......

Imagine if the old PE "Hollywood Subway" was a part of today's operations; again, so ironic that electric rail transit in the LA area has indeed come full circle.....that is....after virtually everything related to previous operations had long ago been destroyed.
Even more ironic is that today's "Blue Line" operates over a portion of the former Long Beach line of the PE......

Could this have been the inspiration for Chicago's CTA building in expressway median's? (I assume this came before Chicago, but not sure....) |

traildriver:
I believe this PE/Freeway alignment came about prior to the CTA operating in the expressway median.
Originally, CA&E interurban trains were to use expressway right of way, but the system abandoned passenger service without notice in 1957, stranding thousands of commuters in the city.
Let me check my files on this.....
