Hey, what do you guys think of the jitney service in NYC and NJ? A lot of people use them as most if not all offer a price advantage and help with the crowded buses, but they are(or were) under a lot of heat for lots of reason. |

What I think you are referring to are the so-called "dollar vans" which are now basically the "black taxis".
It might make sense on the lesser used runs and whether the vans could be shifted from one route to another depending on load factors.
There would be a savings in operating costs, but would the unions allow a two tier system, since a van driver would probably make less money than his bus driver counterpart having the same length of service.
If you can't get a salary concession from the unions, I doubt there would be any significant savings since the operatings costs are not that much more for a large bus and having to have a bus for some of the time and a van for other times, means purchasing more equipment thereby negating any operating savings |
