In a shot taken at the same Triboro Coach storage lot in Astoria, Queens as featured in my last post but in 1948, we see fleet # 932 - a 1935 30 passenger White Motor Company Model 684 and one of seven likenesses numbered between 931 and 937 and all purchased used or acquired by takeover in the mid thirties.

While White's 684's, of which 400 were built between 1934 and 1938, were reportedly quite sluggish, they did feature a then advanced 'air clutch' that eliminated the clutch pedal and smoothed the ride, a White built Model 10A underfloor amidships pancake engine cooled by an under windshield radiator and a unique placement of the rear door for faster egress.

Soldiering on through the war and beyond, Triboro used the sturdily built little 684's mostly in the Astoria area as local feeders to main lines.

Of note on #932 is the darkening of all bright surfaces for war time operation, intakes at either side of the destination sign for the New York required full time mechanical ventilation system, an amid ships oil filler (but no sign of a fuel filler) and a State Public Service Commission number just over the front wheel well which indicated the continuance of a 25 year traction permit inherited by acquisition.

Photo courtesy of 'Vintage-Vault75' and is available at eBay as item # 181171457835.

Mr. L,

Both Triboro Coach and Green Bus acquired some ex-NYCTA TDH-4510s and TDH-5101s in 1968.

Triboro numbers 1134, 1136 - TDH 4510; 1137-1139 - TDH 5101.
Green numbers 952 - TDH 4510; 953 - TDH 5101.

Can you elaborate on the service they performed; their color scheme; and do you have any photos?

BTW, thanks for all the great information you provide!

MaBSTOA 15,

Yes, you are correct in that Green Bus Lines did acquire three ex NYCTA GM Old Looks in 1968.

All 1948's, there was one of each; a 4507, a 4510 and a 5101 (ex city 2091, 4046 and 4576 respectively) and their Green Line numbers became 951, 952 and 953 again respectively).

I never saw the 4510 or the 5101 in operation at all but I sure took a double take when 951 passed by looking brand new in the latest company Old Look livery - at first I thought my mind was playing tricks on me!

It may be that the 4510 and the 5101 were stored in the rear of the Rockaway Boulevard garage and used for parts.

At twenty years of age when purchased, I'm certain that if they paid anything at all for them it was very little!

As far as pictures go; I'd love to find one of 951.

Regards,

Mr. 'L'

I'm not sure where to go with this one as I've never seen photos or read about a 3000 series old look running the streets of Brooklyn, perhaps Mr. L or anyone else and clue me in.

Currently up for bid on eBay - photo and information courtesy of Vintage Vault75 for educational purposes, we see ex-MABSTOA 3281 at the intersection of Church & Flatbush signed for B-35 Church Ave. The slide was taken in 1969. New York City Transit Authority is barely discernible above the side bus number which what I think is an ex Surface Transportation TDH-5103 or 5105 before being transferred to the newly formed MABSTOA in 1962.

This is an ex-Surface Transit GM TDH-5106 serial number 091 acquired in 1954. It was renumbered by MaBSTOA on April 1963.

I forgot to say that the original Surface Transit number was 1081.

Surface bought 10 TDH-5104 in 1953 (numbers 1090-1099 and renumbered 2590-2599 in 1963) followed by 30 TDH-5106s and numbered 1060-1089.

Photographed in 1948 at the company's Corona Yard in Northern Queens is fleet #718 - a 1936 40 passenger Twin Coach Model 40-R and one of 25 likenesses numbered 700 to 724 delivered in increments between 1935 and 1936 to the North Shore Bus Company (NSBCO) of Flushing, New York.

Twin's popular model 40-R, of which over 200 were manufactured between 1935 and 1937, gained power from a model RXCT Twin Coach built 529 cubic inch 126 h.p. gasoline engine mounted transversely at the rear and coupled with a model 6134 Spicer mechanical transmission.

NSBCO's Corona Yard remained in the hands of the company after its takeover by the City of New York Board of Transportation in March of 1947 and was used for aged equipment that was rejected by the city at acquisition and slated for scrap as is seen in an already cannibalized #718.

Of note on the focus is Twin's rather ornate roof fresh air intakes for the New York mandated full time mechanical ventilation system and its side destination sign still showing its last assignment as a Q27 operating between Flushing and Rosewood.

The strange looking truck (right of frame) is a late twenties engine forward 'FWD' (Four Wheel Drive) once used as a road sander and snow plow.

Photo courtesy of 'Vintage-Vault75' and is available on eBay as item # 181171452348.

This location appears to be the same location as the later NYC Board of Transportation Flushing Depot (now MTA Casey Stengel Depot), which is adjacent to the Willets Point Blvd. subway station and the I.R.T. Corona Yards in Flushing Meadow Park.

Normally I stay away from post 1960 presentations in this thread but the image below has great personal meaning to me.

Seen sometime in the very early seventies in Kew Gardens, Queens is fleet #151 - a 1970 52 passenger GM Coach Model T6H-5305A and one of fifteen likenesses numbered 146 to 160 delivered to Green Bus Lines, Inc. of Jamaica, New York (note that forty-five of the same model numbered 101 to 145 were purchased two years earlier).

#151 is at layover on the Q10 line at Kew Gardens Road and Union Turnpike and awaits its appointed time to pull ahead to load subway passengers to JFK International Airport via Lefferts Boulevard and South Conduit Avenue (an extension of the old Old South Road branch).

Standing just behind #151 and awaiting its turn is sibling #153 probably signed for the Airport via Lefferts and Rockaway Boulevards.

While I'm unsure of the date the image was taken, I can tell you that it was early on in the lives of these buses because the Q10 and Q60 were Mr. Cooper's pet routes and he always made certain that they had the latest equipment (probably because of Airport and Manhattan exposure!).

On a personal note; I can't count the times that I sat in that very same spot behind the wheel of either a 4507, 4509, 4512 or 5104 awaiting my turn during the three summers that I worked for the company - good memories!

BTW; I was there only recently and very little has changed in over a half century.

Photo borrowed for educational purposes only.

Great shot from the old neighborhood, Mr.L.
My guess of the year of the photo was either 1970 or 1971 judging from the landmarks.
Green Lines fleet from 1968 and 1970 were good buses, I liked their ride, smooth.

Here is another photo, this one of #147 from July 5, 1976 taken by Ed McKernen. 37 years since?

In those days, one often saw a newspaper headline displayed as in your clear photo. Thanks!

Here is another one of the group of Twin Coach 40R's featured above by Mr. Linsky, North Shore fleet #724, looking clean and new.
