I promised you 'Mayhem at the Lincoln Tunnel' and here it is!;

You have arrived at 'bus heaven' only after you have experienced the nearly one hour crawl down the horseshoe ramp to the mouth of the Jersey end of the Lincoln Tunnel at about 4:30 on a rainy weekday afternoon accompanied by an 'armada' of MCI D4500's deadheading back to the city - so many 4500's, in fact, that you could walk over them between the Jersey Turnpike and 34th. Street!

Forgive the lack of clarity in the following images but they were taken under the most adverse conditions.

Oh, and yes, that's Mr. L's face in the rear view mirror in the fourth image taking that image!

Enjoy,

Mr. Linsky - Green Bus Lines, Inc., Jamaica, New York

What are those extra red lights down low by the reverse lamps?

Brandon,

I'll have to leave the answer to that question to member 'ShortLineMCI' who is most familiar with the D 4500 signaling configuration.

However, if you examine all of the above pictures you will note that on one bus they're both red, on another bus the left one is yellow and the right is red and on a third bus it's just the opposite!

Who knows?

Regards,

Mr. 'L'

Reflectors that are the shape of the reverse lights. No light bulb behind them.

That Lincoln Tunnel is always a mess. One time it took my bus 45 minutes to get through and then another 45 to get into the PABT.

Sometime around 1990, I drove a Christmas shopping trip to NYC along with another bus, both MC9's. Stuck in traffic trying to get into the tunnel on the New York side, I called the other driver on the CB and told him not to try to change lanes because there was a car almost against his right side. He replied that he wasn't going anywhere because he already had a car stuck in the rear wheel well on the left side. Wished him luck and told him I'd wait for him on the other side of the tunnel. That was his first trip there. Welcome to New York!

There are delays, some worse than others, everyday on the coommute in and out of the Port Authority Bus Terminal.
What I consider "adding insult to injury", are the ridiculous recorded announcements the PA broadcasts to late arriving commuters telling them that: "Your delay this morning was caused by a disabled vehicle in the Lincoln Tunnel". As if the folks running to the subway didn't know that or even care......

Traildriver -

A wonderful town, yes? How thoughtful! Upon departing the bus, one gets to hear the "excuse du jour"!
